Career Advice by Mark Phoenixa
GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND! This is the truth you have to remember while playing EVE. The game is very information heavy, with many different concepts and terms that make you go O_o when you start playing. You see something you are not familiar with? Google. Want to fit your ship for some PvP, but need a baseline? Google. Google and player interaction. There are a lot of players who are happy to hold your hand, since they remember how hard it was to start. Don't be scared of trying something new, the worst thing that happens is that you get blown up. And while initially funds are quite hard to come by it gets easier and easier to get them.

Core Skills
These skills will benefit you in any career you chose, so if you are yet unsure what do you want to do in eve, learning these skills even to 'lvl V' wont hurt you.
CPU Management
Power Grid Management

These 2 skills increase CPU and Powergrid available on any ship. These two attributes are used for fitting modules to a ship. In other words you get more freedom to put equipment on your ship the higher these attributes are.
======================================
Capacitor Management
Capacitor Systems Operation

Capacitor volume represents how much energy your ship has for using nearly any active module. It also is used to warp. The higher capacitor capacity is - the more energy intensive modules you can use and for longer periods of time
======================================
Mechanics - 5% bonus to hull hitpoints(your ship is a little tougher to kill)per level.
Evasive Maneuvering - 5% bonus to ship agility(speed and maneuverability)
Spaceship Command - prerequisite for any of the lager ships
Drones - allows for command of 1 more drone per level(this is paramount on any ship, since prones are used to at least some extent nearly anywhere)
Navigation - 5% speed increase per level

Starting a career

Here are some skillsets to get you started on a few basic professions:

Incursion runner (s)killset
To be fair, combat is such a huge part of EVE online that it get very hard to draft any generalized skillset meant to make you into a combat pilot. There are different kinds of combat pilots: gankers, bashing fleets, camping, ratting, stelth bombers, blah blah blah. So, among these numerous combat activities there exists one that i see as a very good overall learning experience. Incursions. They are a kind of a PvE activity that is done in a big fleet of BBs(battleships, largest sub-capital vessels), and it pays really well. It will teach you operating in a fleet, being confident with your ship and its mechanics. Skill-wise if you have the skills to start incursions, it will not be hard to learn any additional combat profession. It may take a while to start doing these incursions(about 3-4 weeks), so you may focus on combat missions while your skills are being learned. Lets get on to the actual steps to get into incursions:

UniWiki Incursion Page - read the page carefully, to understand what incursions are.
WarpToMe- are a group of people that organize fleets to do incursion sites. You will have to fit your ship according to their convention to be accepted.

The easiest ship to get into is their starter Hyperion fit. There is some leeway they allow with their fit, like letting you fit T1 guns instead of T2. So that cuts the time you need to get into that ship and use that fit by a lot. Hyperion Low SP.xml (2.09 KB) - the actual ship you will need to get. You can upload this file into the game.

Here are the skills you will need for this ship with all the modules:

Spaceship Command IV
Gallente Destroyer III
Gallente Cruiser III
Gallente Battlecruiser III
Gallente Battleship I
(better more if you can bear to wait)
Hull Upgrades IV
Weapon Upgrades IV
Tactical Shield Manipulation IV
Missile Launcher Operation III
Light Missiles III
Heavy Missiles I
Gunnery V
Medium Hybrid Turret III
Large Hybrid Turret I
Mechanics III
Drones V
Light Drone Operation I
Heavy Drone Operation I

Mining Skillset
Mining
Mining Upgrades
Astrogeology

These skills are essential for any miner as they increase you mining yield and give access to better mining equipment. Mining should be learned to V as soon as possible, and Astrogeology to at least III. Mining Upgrades need to be brought to no more than IV.
============================================
Mining Barge is a skill that allows you to fly 'Mining Barges'(surprise). They are the best friend of any somewhat serious miner. So be sure to get them as soon as you can. First you learn the minimum required skills to fly one, then you further up your mining skills, as flying a mining barge will increase your yield more than any 1 or 2 levels in pure mining skills.

Exploration Skillset
This is the minimum skillset needed to be able to scan and hack any site related to non-violent exploration.
Archaeology III
Astrometric Acquisition II
Astrometric Pinpointing II
Astrometric Rangefinding II
Astrometrics III
Hacking III
Gallente Frigate/Amarr Frigate/Caldari Frigate/Minmatar Frigate III

Neural remapping and implants
Character attributes correspond to skill learning speed. Each skill has a primary and secondary assigned attribute. Raising these attributes will make the skill to be learned faster. This can be done by remapping the attributes and/or using implants. As a new player, you have an extra remap. Remapping your brain will allow you to train certain skills faster.
